Happy Labor Day, everyone!
Happy Monday, everyone!
Today is Labor Day!
To workers of the United States, this day means a day of rest.
To all children, it is the day that symbolizes the end of the summer and the beginning of the school year.
And according to Wikipedia, Labor Day is a federal holiday observed on the first Monday in September that celebrates the economic and social contributions of workers.
If you think about it, it’s pretty rad that there is a holiday dedicated to workers for a day of rest.
So, who is it that we should thank for coming up with holiday for workers?
It was Peter J. McGuire who first brought up the idea, way back in 1882. This gentleman happened to be working for the American Federation of Labor at the time, too.
It wasn’t until 12 years later, however, that Congress finalized it as a holiday. And it was no easy persuasion to get them to do it, in fact, it was the massive riots-after-riots starting on May 11, 1894 going until June 26th, when congress stopped fighting back. After a dozen workers were killed in result of the war between Congress and the workers, Congress passed the act of making the holiday set.
But if that happened on June 26th, why is Labor Day in September?
September 5th was observed by many of the nation’s trade unions, and so the date was chosen by the CLU of New York.
The first big Labor day celebration was in 1882, by the Central Labor Union of New York. And it was the state of Oregon that was first to make this holiday finalized in 1887. By the time 1894 rolled around, up to thirty states officially celebrated Labor Day!
Neat, huh? So how will you be celebrating Labor Day?
For me and the rest of the family here, we will be spending it together – I think a good board game and some yummy food is in order!
Happy Labor Day everyone! And thank you Wikipedia, for all of your help in aiding me on this post 🙂
